Secrets From Celebrity Chefs

secrets of the kitchen & cellar collage the taste la

Secrets from television’s hottest celebrity chefs and extraordinary small bites from Los Angeles’ trendiest dining establishments were all the buzz at this year’s The Taste.  It was 4 days of fabulous food, drinks and demonstrations set in some of Los Angeles’ best backdrops: Downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood and Beverly Hills.  We indulged in an afternoon of sensory overload with all of the amazing sights and smells at Saturday’s “Secrets from the Kitchen and Cellar” event in Beverly Hills.  Food personalities such as Scott Conant (restaurateur and creative mind behind Scarpetta), Claire Robinson (of the The Food Network show The 5 Ingredient Fix), Aarti Sequeira (winner of season 6 of the Next Food Network Star), and Michael Voltaggio (winner of Bravo’s season 6 of Top Chef who is about to open his first restaurant,  Ink, on September 21st) lead cooking demonstrations and spoke on panels.  We enjoyed watching the cooking demonstrations, panel discussions and feasting on fabulous small plates, but what we truly enjoyed was getting to meet the chefs.

When you love food like we do, going to an event that revolves around food, wine, beer, and spirits is match found in heaven.  We had the pleasure of attending last year’s Taste of Beverly Hills that was hosted by Food and Wine Magazine and it was truly one of those event that was not to be missed  This year, Food and Wine Magazine teamed up with the Los Angeles Times, who also hosted a food event in LA last year, to put together a truly spectacular event called The Taste.  It spans 4 days in 3 different locations and features 9 different events to attend.  You’ll be able to see food personalities such as Susan Feniger, Duff Goldman, and Giada De Laurentiis along with unlimited food and drinks from some of Los Angeles’ most exciting restaurants such as ScarpettaBorder Grill and CHAYA.  We’re going to try to make it to as many events as we can handle going to, but it looks as though we’ll have to strategize and choose which ones we really want to attend.

Coconut Banana Bread

coconut banana bread

Summer is almost over and what better way to celebrate the last few days than with a loaf of tropical coconut banana bread? Baking banana bread is one of my favorite ways to use ripe bananas.  I love coconut and we always have coconut flakes on hand so adding it to the bread was an easy decision.  The sweet ripe bananas and rich toasted coconut flakes make for an incredibly flavorful quick bread.  The sour cream adds a richness and moistness to the bread that will make you come back for seconds!     It’s so easy that no beaters or mixers are needed to whip up this delicious treat!  It’s great as is or with a light smear of butter.  It’s a wonderful way to enjoy a taste of summer all year long!

Raspberry Hazelnut Frappe

raspberry hazelnut frappe

We live in a day and age where there is a coffee shop on every street corner and many of us have grown accustomed to having coffee beyond that one cup to wake us up in the mornings.  There are so many ways to enjoy your coffee from lattes to cappuccinos to ice blended mochas.  Summertime is upon us, so what better way to enjoy your coffee than as a creamy, velvety ice blended frappe with an absolutely addictive combination of flavors.  We’ve come to love this quick and easy Raspberry Hazelnut Frappe.  Its a decadent ice blended coffee drink that will transport you to the streets of Italy with its notes of rich chocolate,  lush raspberry and fragrant hazelnut.  We had the pleasure of creating another great recipe as part of the Foodbuzz Tastemaker Program.  This summer time drink creation was inspired by Godiva Coffee .  We gravitated towards using their Chocolate Truffle coffee figuring that Godiva knew a thing or two about chocolate, and they were spot on.

This is a perfect drink to enjoy in the morning with your favorite pastry or with a leisurely weekend brunch.  I’d be just as happy enjoying one as a refreshing afternoon treat.  You can even try mixing it up a bit by changing the flavor profile to incorporate French vanilla, almond, orange, or even kick it up a notch by using Chambord Liquor instead of raspberry syrup for a cocktail concoction.

Taylor Thursday and Puppy Marshmallow Pops

puppy marshmallow popsIn honor of Taylor’s 4th birthday we invited a few of our friends and their four legged “children” to the Laguna Beach Dog Park for a play date.  The dogs had a great time chasing each other, rolling in the grass and of course snacking on treats.   Taylor’s birthday is an opportunity for us to plan for a fun play date at the park, socialize and celebrate her (as if we don’t already celebrate her daily!).  Before I had a dog of my own I never really understood the bond and relationship between man and dog.  Now that we have one it’s hard to put into words how life changing it is.  I was talking to my co-worker this week about dogs and life lessons.  She has two dogs of her own and she believes that families with children should consider adding a dog to their family.   She said that through the years her dogs has taught her children the meaning of unconditional love, what it means to be supportive, caring and loyal.  These are traits that many humans have trouble mastering on a daily basis, while dogs never falter.  In the future, I look forward to seeing our children fall in love with Taylor and what life lessons she is able to teach them.

These large marshmallows are lovingly adorned with paw prints, dog bone candies and dressed up as dogs for the party.  These  were a hit at the party amongst kids and adults alike.

Taylor is such a well loved dog and we are so lucky that Wilton generously supplied all the decorative items to assemble these marshmallow treats.  With a little patience and an offset spatula you can transform a modest marshmallow into a cute treat on a stick that has a lot of personality.   I have been challenging myself to make more creative marshmallow pops  ever since I made the wedding cake marshmallow pops for The Ravenous Couple‘s wedding.  It’s been a lot of trial and error, but also fun along the way.
