Nautical Themed Baby Shower

nautical marshmallow pops

Last Sunday we went to a baby shower for our friends Vivian and Andy.  It was a gloomy day in Orange County, but that didn’t keep their 100 guests from coming out to help them celebrate.  The eight girls who planned and organized the shower had a huge feat in front of them.  Anyone who knows Vivian knows that she has always been and will always be the “hostess with the mostess”.  She plans and creates some of the most amazing events (Valentine’s Day Tea, Valentine’s Day Tea part 2).   She has a great eye for design and pays close attention to detail.  I think the girls did a fantastic job and hosted a wonderful and fun baby shower for Vivian and Andy.  It was classy and trendy at the same time.

The girls chose a nautical theme for the baby shower.  The colors were shades of blue, yellow, white and red.  The park was decorated with paper pendants, rope, handmade pinwheels, and sand buckets.  Thienan created a dessert bar that was overflowing with delectable sweets.  She made individual magic layer bars, pumpkin whoopie pies, lemon bars, chocolate dipped pretzels, chocolate cupcakes, and coconut macaroons.  I was asked to create marshmallow pops that would tie into the colors and theme.  I knew I wanted to make marshmallow pops  topped with a “life preserver” and some blue “cupcake” marshmallow pops.

What a gorgeous dessert table!

Besides the delicious dessert bar the other highlight of the baby shower was that it was catered by The Flying Pig Truck.  Gourmet food trucks are very popular in Southern California right now.  You can read more about the food trucks in my previous post on the OC Foodie Fest.  It was such a great idea to have the shower catered by a LA based truck since many of us OC people rarely get the opportunity to try the LA food trucks.  The Flying Pig Truck features fusion tacos and buns.  We got to try their famous Pork Belly Bun, Carne Asada Taco, Smoked Chicken Taco and the Tamarind Duck Taco.  The meat was very tender and well seasoned.   My favorite was the Pork Belly Bun and the Tamarind Duck Taco.

We also had a chance to hang out with Chris and Betty, the girls behind the blog Corque this weekend.  If you’re interested in learning more about wine, beer and spirits then their blog is definitely a great resource.

The kids enjoyed the marshmallow pops and the photo booth. I love the handmade chalk board sail boat. Pictured is Thienan and her beautiful family!

How to make the “life preservers” for the Nautical Marshmallow Pops:

Ingredients:

  • Life Savers candy (of your choice – mint or flavored)
  • Fruit roll ups

Directions:

  • Peel open and unroll the Fruit Roll Up.  On a cutting board, use a pizza cutter to cut into thin strips.  Then trim the strips down to a length long enough to wrap around the Life Saver.   The Fruit Roll Up is sticky enough to adhere to itself without an additional binder.  (I was able wrapped 18 Life Savers using one mini Fruit Roll Up.)  I used a toothpick to help position and adhere the Fruit Roll Up to the Life Saver.
  • Follow the directions to make the marshmallow pops. The Life Saver is heavy so make sure to allow the candy melt to set up for a couple of minutes before placing the Life Saver on top of the marshmallow pop.
